Road-testing the Mazda Familia Rotary Coupe

Summary: Car Graphic purchased the Mazda Familia Rotary Coupe as soon as it was released, and immediately began our customary long-term practical testing. Our magazine has already purchased the Toyota Corolla, Bluebird 1300, Lotus Europa, and Nissan Laurel one after the other, and is conducting controlled tests from a strictly objective standpoint while also putting them to use in daily life. The Familia Rotary Coupe is our fifth attempt to evaluate a new model through this method of long-term practical testing.

A Rotary-Engined Car for the Masses

Magazine: This time, thanks to the cooperation of Toyo Kogyo, we conducted our test of the Familia Rotary Coupe at the company’s Miyoshi test course. First, we’d like you to tell us something about the thinking behind the development of this car.

Road-testing the Mazda Familia Rotary SS

The Familia Rotary SS is a demonstration of the confidence Toyo Kogyo has in its aim of bringing the rotary engine into widespread everyday use. C/G has evaluated the rotary engine as a whole on several occasions and rated it highly.

The engine in the Rotary SS (and in the lower-priced E-type version of the Rotary Coupe announced at the same time) is the same 2-rotor, 982cc, 100ps unit used in the Rotary Coupe, which has now been on the market for a year, installed here in the Familia 4-door sedan. The engine and its ancillaries are exactly the same, but the manufacturer currently offers a choice of 2-barrel and 4-barrel Solex-Stromberg carburetors at the same price. With the 2-barrel type, maximum torque falls slightly from 13.5kgm/3500rpm to 12.8kgm/3500rpm, but the test car was fitted with the same 4-barrel type as the Rotary Coupe.

Rotary SS Takes to the Tomei and Mountain Roads

The Familia Rotary SS is the third model in Toyo Kogyo’s rotary series, following the Cosmo and the Rotary Coupe.

The smooth performance characteristic of the rotary engine has already been amply demonstrated by those first two cars.

Would the Familia Rotary SS live up to that established reputation and show the same ability? It was with considerable anticipation that I approached this road test…

Outstanding Power Performance in a Sedan

Magazine: Our test of the Familia Rotary SS took place at Toyo Kogyo’s Miyoshi proving ground this time. To get started, we would like to ask about the outline of this model and the intentions behind its release.
