Summary: Mitsubishi’s new mass-market sedan adopts an orthodox mechanical layout derived largely from the Galant. Generally smooth and flexible engine, though somewhat noisy at higher speeds. Excellent 5-speed gearbox. Handling remains within the familiar boundaries of a conventional Japanese passenger car. Overall balance is admirable, making the Lancer a car with broad, all-around appeal.

Comparative Test: Lancer 1600GSL vs. Violet 1600SSS
Two new models of comparable class have recently appeared in quick succession: Nissan’s Violet 1600SSS and Mitsubishi’s Lancer 1600GSL. Both place strong emphasis on family-car comfort and character, yet as both manufacturers possess extensive rally experience, it seems only a matter of time before dedicated rally kits are offered for each.

Road testing the Mitsubishi Lancer 1600GSR
Just after we had fully enjoyed testing the Works Rally Lancer for our Road Test (see the August issue), Mitsubishi released a hot twin-carb Lancer onto the market. Without hesitation, we contacted Mitsubishi and arranged to borrow a pale metallic green Lancer 1600GSR.
In an era flooded with over-decorated domestic cars, the Lancer’s neat, understated bodywork is immediately refreshing. Against the early-autumn landscapes of Izu and Hakone, the Lancer fits perfectly; it is light and sprightly, reminiscent of an Escort in its agility.
